Helping Bipolar UK evaluate a campaign to encourage earlier diagnosis
Bipolar UK’s Could it be bipolar? campaign aimed to bring down diagnosis times for those who are living with bipolar symptoms but who are yet to be diagnosed. Between October 2022 and April 2023 approximately 18,000 people engaged with Could it be bipolar? In October 2022, Fiveways was commissioned to conduct an evaluation of the campaign’s impact in both the short and medium terms.
Our 2023 report can be found here.
Fiveways were very thorough and took the time to really understand what we needed from the evaluation process. Their expertise made sure we captured and reported on the data we needed. Fiveways’ report has been brilliant for proving the value and impact of our project to our funder. It has also been useful across the charity, providing inspirational quotes and examples to support the benefits of the project. We will be using the evaluation report’s recommendations to inform how we develop the project, and its conclusions will be our springboard for seeking further funding to extend the project.
Our evaluation included
To capture outcomes, Fiveways developed a baseline survey targeted at those who felt they may have bipolar following an initial online Q&A tool based on common bipolar symptoms.
To determine whether the campaign had prompted people to take action, and to assess change over a longer period, the baseline survey was followed by a second survey three months later which invited people to opt in to semi-structured qualitative interviews.
Our evaluation revealed
Baseline research revealed that the campaign prompted positive change:
- 56% felt their understanding of how to get a bipolar diagnosis had improved.
- 72% intended to see their GP to talk about their concerns.
Follow-up research three months later revealed:
- 65% of follow up participants had contacted their GP to discuss their concerns.
- 80% agreed that the Could it be bipolar? campaign was an important catalyst in finding out whether or not they had bipolar.
